Discovery learning, representation, and explanation within a computer-based simulation: finding the right mix

چکیده
The purpose of this research was to explore how adult users interact and learn during an interactive computer-based simulation supplemented with brief multimedia explanations of the content. A total of 52 college students interacted with a computer-based simulation of Newton’s laws of motion in which they had control over the motion of a simple screen object—an animated ball. Two simulation conditions were studied, each differing in how the feedback of the ball’s speed, direction, and position was represented: graphical feedback consisted of animated graphics and textual feedback consisted of numeric displays. In addition, half of the participants were given simulations supplemented with brief multimedia explanations of the content modeled by the simulation in order to investigate how to promote referential processing, a key component of dual coding theory. Results showed significant differences for both the use of the explanations and simulations containing graphical feedback in helping participants gain both implicit and explicit understanding of the science principles. # 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Perceptual Learning Style Preferences and Computer-Assisted Writing Achievement within the Activity Theory Framework
Learning styles are considered among the significant factors that aid instructors in deciding how well their students learn a second or foreign language (Oxford, 2003). Although this issue has been accepted broadly in educational psychology, further research is required to examine the relationship between learning styles and language learning skills. Thus, the present study was carried out to in...
متن کاملDrug Discovery Acceleration Using Digital Microfluidic Biochip Architecture and Computer-aided-design Flow
A Digital Microfluidic Biochip (DMFB) offers a promising platform for medical diagnostics, DNA sequencing, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and drug discovery and development. Conventional Drug discovery procedures require timely and costly manned experiments with a high degree of human errors with no guarantee of success. On the other hand, DMFB can be a great solution for miniaturization, int...
متن کاملSimulation of Human Language Acquisition Process by Brain Like Memory System
The acceleration phenomenon of infant word acquisition cannot be explained by simple neural learning mechanism of brain. To explain it, we applied memory model PATON for word meaning acquisition, and modified the model to include SRN to enable syntax learning. The combination of PATON meaning representation and SRN syntax representation enabled explanation of the syntax based word acquisition a...
متن کاملA Q-learning Based Continuous Tuning of Fuzzy Wall Tracking
A simple easy to implement algorithm is proposed to address wall tracking task of an autonomous robot. The robot should navigate in unknown environments, find the nearest wall, and track it solely based on locally sensed data. The proposed method benefits from coupling fuzzy logic and Q-learning to meet requirements of autonomous navigations. Fuzzy if-then rules provide a reliable decision maki...
متن کاملThe Effect of Visual Representation, Textual Representation, and Glossing on Second Language Vocabulary Learning
In this study, the researcher chose three different vocabulary techniques (Visual Representation, Textual Enhancement, and Glossing) and compared them with traditional method of teaching vocabulary. 80 advanced EFL Learners were assigned as four intact groups (three experimental and one control group) through using a proficiency test and a vocabulary test as a pre-test. In the visual group, stu...
